There is a lot of talk these days about health and wellness, a
wealth of nutritional and exercise guidelines, and a myriad of
"instructions" for achieving a well-balanced and effective lifestyle.
Included in most discussions is at least a passing mention of "a good
night's sleep." Sleeping well alleviates pain, reduces inflammation, spurs
creativity, strengthens memory and boosts performance in all areas of life.
Lack of sleep can contribute to a variety of maladies, from overweight and
obesity to attention deficit problems, from physical ailments to mental
disorders. Sleeplessness is a symptom of serious illness; it is also the single
most important deterrent to recovery from illness, so much so that physicians
sometimes induce comas in patients in order to provide the body its needed
rest.
It stands to reason, then, that shopping for a new mattress can be a trying
experience. Experts recommend "trying out" a mattress that seems
suitable, and for more than a 10-minute "test run" in the display
area. If it is possible to arrange a home trial, say the authorities, it will
be possible to determine whether a specific mattress suits your individual needs.
At the least, when buying a mattress, it is wise to discuss return policy; if a
mattress is uncomfortable at the beginning of its life, it will definitely not
get better with time.
Type of Mattress
Firm or soft, full mattress or twin, pillow top or foam, for occasional or
every night use -- choosing a mattress is an individual decision. What is vital
is the type of support it offers: Children tend to be happier on softer
surfaces, but even for young bones, proper support is an issue. When choosing a
mattress, it is wise also to consider the choice of pillow. Back sleepers
have different requirements from side sleepers; and restless sleepers have
another set of needs.
Pillows can be replaced whenever necessary, but the average life of a
mattress is said to be about eight years. Some people, of course, keep them
longer; guest room mattress sets can serve almost indefinitely, if they receive
only occasional use.
Know at the outset that price, by itself, is not always the best determinant
of quality. Lasting value can be found, however, at a variety of price points.
As for those other benefits? Waking up to a new day with a zest for life and
a good attitude -- that may be priceless.
